Age 7-11, 12-13

manual Recommended Age (s): Suitable for all primary and secondary ages
Preparing the material: The cube nets are meant to be copied and given to the children.
Sides not to be laminated: all
Sides or cards to be bound into a booklet: none
Teaching content: Nets, surface area and volume calculations, connection between arithmetic and geometry, awareness of length x breadth x height, preparation for cubing numbers.
Possible Applications: Free work, individual work, pair work, small group work
Before you begin: To work with this material, the children require:
a mat, possibly the 'Pink Tower', the 'Short Bead Stair' chain, squares and cubes material, a pair of scissors, glue
How to use: The children can construct the cubes. The nets are folded along the black lines, and the gray areas are glued on.
Children can calculate the surface area and the volume of the finished cubes. They can compare these to the 'Pink Tower' and to the 'Bead Tower' of cubes from the chain display.
Control of Error: The material enables the children to check their own progress as they work.
Additional information: The material represents a connection between the 'Pink Tower' and the 'Bead Tower'. The dimensions and areas on each cube are made visible, as each surface is divided by a grid of small squares to facilitate counting and calculating.
Children aged between 7 and 9 love to build 'Pink Towers' out of paper. For this, the templates can be copied onto pink paper. Other colors can also be used to match the 'Bead Tower' for example.
