Contents: The material consists of a center piece (the Sun), an inner ring (12 pieces that make up the 4 seasons), an outer ring (12 segments, each of which shows a picture which matches a month of the year), 12 cards displaying the names of the months, 2 A4 templates (coloring cards), 4 cards for the day / night ratio, and a photo of the complete cycle.
Recommended Age (s): 8-11 years
Preparing the material: All of the cards are meant to be laminated (recommended laminate thickness: 90-125 micron).
The individual cards must be cut out.
Sides not to be laminated: templates
Sides or cards to be bound into a booklet: none
Teaching content: The year cycle, names of the months and seasons, festivals and events
Possible Applications: Group and class work, birthday celebrations, projects about the year and on the topic of time (especially the change from one season to the next)
Before you begin: The year cycle is the base for the didactic concept of measuring time, and follows on directly from the topic of the Solar System. In the northern hemisphere, the complete cycle is laid out anticlockwise (the Earth circles the Sun anticlockwise). The middle piece can be replaced with a sun made out of material or wood.
How to use: For the celebration of a birthday, the birthday child can circle the complete cycle holding a globe once for every year. The teacher, parents or the child can then tell the class about events that happened in each year of his / her life.
Control of Error: The pieces are color coded to help the children. They may also take a look at the photo of the complete cycle.
Additional information: A birthday can be celebrated with this material in many ways. For example, the birthday child can start by giving one candle per year to a class mate. This child then circles the complete cycle starting at January. When he / she reaches December, the candle can be lit and placed on the sun in the middle of the cycle.
The material can be expanded by adding different information from our, and other, cultures, such as zodiac signs, Celtic astrology, etc.
The Year Chain is a material that can be used effectively with the 'Year Cycle Floor'. It consists of a chain of pearls, one for every day of the year. Each month is a different color. The pearls are laid out in a circle, eg around the floor cycle (which should fit nicely inside). As with all activities using chains, the units of time can be counted and labeled. The chain comes with arrows, with which events during the year can be marked with either pictures or words. Example of events are festivals of different religions, the beginning of the seasons, the birthdays of the children, etc. (tips from Saskia Haspel)
The 4 cards showing the day / night ratio can be discussed and then placed at the correct points around the complete cycle.

www.peruci.at ) produces a year cycle made of wood. This material combines very well with the cards from my 'Year Cycle Floor'.
