M. Montessori told the story of measurement. People have always wanted to compare themselves, to measure themselves. Surely the people in the Stone Age, who came from hunting, compared their prey. For thousands of years, people measured with body measurements, with elbows, thumbs, and steps. The great pyramids were built by the Egyptian builders using the royal ell and not a measuring tape. It wasn't until 4,400 years later that people agreed on the meter.
