Age12-13
Brief descriptionThe material presents the different geological ages in words and pictures. Many word and picture cards of animals and plants from various eras can be placed and arranged accordingly. The laying material is intended as a supplement to the "earth age chain".
ContributorsWolfgang Schmidt, Axel Holtz
manualScope: Motifs are shown on 65 photos, which can be assigned to 11 time periods. There is a matching name card, an arrow for the wooden chain and a text card for each of the motifs. There are no text cards for the motifs of the tertiary and quaternary!
The 11 periods are also described in pictures, words and text. Here, too, there are arrows for the wooden chain.
The material also contains a title card, an overview map and, as an addition, plant species, which can also be assigned to the time periods.
Recommended school level (s): 3rd - 6th grade
Manufacturing: Laminate the sheets (recommended film thickness: 90-125 microns).
 Cut out the cards individually.
Pages not to be laminated: page with description
Pages or cards bound in a booklet: none
Content / curriculum reference: Earth history
Possible uses: Possible use in the context of subject areas or projects such as:
Biology, geography, geological age, dinosaur projects, in connection with the "black band", ...
Use in free work, in partner work or small group work.
Preparations: To work with this material, the children also need:
The wooden chain, models and objects to assign,
How it works: The children put on the chain and first assign the arrows of the earth ages to the pearls of the wooden chain. (Example: Neogen begins 23 million years ago - the arrow “Neogen” thus points to the 23rd wooden pearl). They do the same with the remaining pictures, models, objects and arrows.
Self-control: The material is used for self-control. Notes could be placed on the back of the pictures, word and text cards. The control booklet, which contains all motifs, names and years, is not included in the material, but can be downloaded and printed out free of charge from the Internet.
Experiences, tips, tips: The material is based on the “evolution chain” by Axel Holtz (Ulm 2000)
The “evolution chain” is an extension and new concept and goes back to the “Urweltkette” by Siegfried Fleck (Düsseldorf), Thomas Helmle and Petra Wöbcke-Helmle (Mainhardt) from 1994.
The material should be used in conjunction with a wooden chain.
The wooden chain consists of 600 wooden beads, with each bead representing a million years. Every tenth pearl is slightly larger.
The chain can be found under cosmic material, history, evolution in many different variants.
Arrows, pictures, cards and objects can be assigned. An additional control folder summarizes the material again and can also be used for self-control.
This control folder is available as a free download at:
www.lernmaterial.at The things seen on the picture cards can either be collected (shells, trilobites, sponges, ...) or bought as models (eg animal models) in toy shops.
 Many models are available at:
www.schleich-s.de Note on the "missing" text cards on the motifs of the tertiary and quaternary. Adding text cards to these pictures (horse, hedgehog, whale, penguin, ...) would have exceeded the scope of the material. I think children who work with this material are able to get information about these animals from encyclopedias and the Internet. This can result in a lot of interesting further work.
