Bring the study of prepositions to life with 'Preposition Twister,' a new interactive grammar game. This game is played by two, three, or four children who become the nouns of their sentences and literally embody them. The players choose from a selection of prepositions to construct simple sentences that simultaneously give them tasks: Who has to stand next to, in front of, or between whom? The players then demonstrate this relationship with their bodies before symbolizing and recording it.
At the beginning, two players could demonstrate the sentence "Person 1 is behind Person 2." The game then continues to the next two players. If more than two children play at the same time, it leads to more complexity. For example, three players could try to represent the sentences "Person 1 is behind Person 2." Person 3 is in front of Person 1. Person 3 is next to Person 2." Four players can form four sentences from up to eight noun cards that create an interactive human sculpture. The students then present their sculpture to see if this is physically possible.
Once mastered, children can expand the game by exploring and adding their own prepositions. "Preposition Twister" isolates the function of the preposition while building on the needs of children aged 5 to 12 for interactive learning with peers. By moving and relating spatially to each other, children gain a deep understanding of the meaning of these things in relation to each other.
