The strength of Number line athletics lies in its simplicity, the comprehensible connection between the blocks (quantities) and the position of a number on the number line. This connection stimulates the transition from counting quantities to counting numbers on a number line and ultimately it stimulates the development of a mental number line.
The yellow and red blocks give substance to the number line. The child learns to understand how a number line is composed. This is important for its development of calculation abilities (the number line often becomes a small trick, while this way children really see what four is, instead of them seeing a number 4 on a number line). The holder is shaped like a number line into which the dividers represent the lines on a number line. Use the numbered cards to visualize the row for counting up to 20.
Practice making leaps on the number line and make adding numbers up to 10 and up to 20 comprehensible. The cards with leapers make the leaps even more concrete. These cards can both be used as an aid and as control cards. Here the numbered cards can be used as answer cards for counting.
